beware of the scripts you (unconsciously) follow

Rule 1: There are no rules.

Anyone who tells you there’s a rule is either selling their version of reality or living in ignorance.

Most things are just human construct. That’s why we go to school, get a job, buy a house, do this and do that… to be a good fellow citizen of society. But if you think about it, most of the time we are just following the crowd on some societal norm. But they are just made up by other humans.

It’s kind of like the meaning of life. Because there’s no inherent meaning in life, how we give life meaning becomes really important.

One of my favorite books is Derek Sivers's How to Live. Every chapter is a way of how you can live life: "Be independent'," "Make memories," or "Master something." In a way, each chapter contradicts each other. They are different conflicting ways of how you can live life. Things could be true but also not true depending on your perspective.

A big takeaway of the book is that “life is not a problem to be solved, it’s a paradox to be experienced.”

Understanding that there are no universal rules to life means recognizing the importance of the rules we choose to follow. The moment we fully embrace this is the moment we take responsibility of our lives. It is a rite of passage.

If none of what we choose matters, all the matters is what we choose.

What rules do you want to unlearn and what rules do you want to learn?
